Grandmaster Kim's Notes for November 2008
Sport Taekwon-Do has been a tremendous export from South Korea. The Taekwon-Do politicians and practitioners who pioneered the
movement to introduce Taekwon-Do to the Olympic Games and to continue its status as a medal sport should be commended. Not only
have they created and sustained a mainstream version of the martial art, but they have also generated excitement for the sport
in countries like Nigeria, Afganistan, Mexico and Kazakhstan. All four countries are relatively newcomers to the sport and all four
countries brought tremendous pride to their people through Taekwon-Do at the last Olympic Games.
I see the value of sport Taekwon-Do, however in my teaching I try to incorporate it into a comprehensive curriculum that is based
primarily on traditional Taekwon-Do. Traditional Taekwon-Do offers a variety of hand techniques, low kicks, joint locks and self-
defense techniques that are valuable in creating a full martial art education. In addition the martial purpose, attitude and
intention instilled through traditional Taekwon-Do produces a different practitioner at the end of the day.
Keep practicing.
